Privacy policy

The short version

yardsalist is a free directory of yard, estate, moving and community sales. There are no accounts, and we never ask for your name, email or phone number to search or to post a sale.

We don’t sell your information, and we don’t show ads or use advertising cookies.

Sales you post are public

When you post a sale, everything in the listing is published for anyone to see, including search engines: the title, description, street address, neighborhood, city, state, ZIP code, map location, dates, times, sale type and tags. We ask you to confirm you’re allowed to publish the address before posting.

Please don’t put phone numbers, email addresses or other personal details in your description.

When you post, you get a management code for editing or cancelling the sale. We store only a scrambled (one-way hashed) version of it, so we can’t look it up or recover it for you.

Searching

What you search for and the area you choose (a city, a ZIP code, or your approximate position if you tap “Use my location”) are sent to our servers to find sales, and they appear in the page address so you can bookmark or share a search.

As you type in the “Where” box, the letters typed so far are sent to our servers to suggest matching US cities and ZIP codes from our own built-in list. Nothing else is sent with them, and suggestions are answered from our list, not by an outside service.

We don’t build a history of your searches or link them to you. Like every request to the site, they can appear in our host’s short-term operational logs, which are kept for a few days.

Your device’s location is requested only when you tap “Use my location”, and only with your browser’s permission.

If a place you type isn’t in our built-in list of US cities and ZIP codes, we look it up with OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service. We send it only the text you typed, never your IP address, and keep the result for a limited time so repeat lookups are faster.

Keeping the site safe

To limit spam and abuse, we keep short-lived counters tied to a scrambled version of your IP address. The scrambling changes every day, and the counters are deleted within about two days.

When you post or edit a sale, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you’re a person. Cloudflare receives your IP address and browser details for that check.

The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes requests, including IP addresses, to deliver and protect the site and may keep short-term operational logs.

Saved on your device

Your saved stops, visited marks, unsent sale drafts and management codes are stored in your browser’s local storage on your device. They aren’t sent to us, except that a management code is sent when you use it to edit or cancel a sale. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them.

Other services your browser contacts

Map images load from OpenStreetMap’s tile servers, which receive your IP address and the map area you’re viewing. Getting directions opens Google Maps, where Google’s privacy policy applies.

Advertising

yardsalist doesn’t show ads right now. If that changes, we’ll update this policy before ads appear and ask for consent where the law requires it.

Children

yardsalist isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them.

How long listings stay up

Sales are removed from public listings after their end date, or as soon as you cancel them with your management code.

Your choices and rights

You can cancel your sale at any time with your management code. If you’ve lost your code, or a listing shows your address without your permission, contact us and we’ll take it down.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information, or to opt out of its sale or sharing. To make a request, email privacy@yardsalist.com.

Changes and contact

We’ll update this page when our practices change and revise the date below.
